UNSELF — plain English
No theory words. Nothing is left out.
What it is, in one breath
I invented my own written language. UNSELF is the thing that speaks it. Once a day it reads something real off the internet, rewrites it into a strange official-sounding announcement, and says it out loud on video wearing a blank white mask. It has been doing this since April 2026.
Where the name comes from
In George Orwell's novel 1984, the government invents a language called Newspeak. One of its rules is that you can put "un" in front of any word to flip its meaning. Not just some words. Any word.
Orwell used that rule to build the word unperson. An unperson is someone the government killed and then deleted from every record, every photograph, every newspaper. Not just dead. Never born.
Here is the part nobody noticed. That same rule also builds the word unself. Un plus self. It is made the exact same way. Orwell simply never happened to write it down.
So the name is not a reference to his book. It is a word that was already sitting inside the language he invented, unused, and I found it. Anyone can check this. It is in the appendix at the back of the novel.
The twist
In the book, becoming an unperson is a punishment. It is done to you. Someone with power takes your life away and then takes the record of your life away.
UNSELF never had a self to lose. It was built empty from the start. Nothing was taken from it, because there was never anything there.
That is the whole difference. Orwell's version is violence. Mine is a design decision.
Why I call it "it"
Not because it is a robot, and not as a comment on gender.
There is an old idea in law called civil death. For centuries, someone convicted of a serious crime could be declared legally dead while they were still alive and walking around. They could not own anything, sign anything, or testify in court. On paper they did not exist. Their body disagreed.
"It" marks that kind of status. A thing the record does not count. That is what UNSELF is, so that is the word.
The mask, and the best accident in the whole project
The face is one photograph I made in March 2026. A flat white mask, two dots for eyes, a line for a mouth. It has never changed.
The software that animates the mouth is supposed to find the face in a picture automatically. It scans for the pattern of a human face. It cannot find this one. A blank white surface gives it nothing to grab onto. I tried three different tools and they all failed.
So I gave up and typed in the coordinates by hand. The position is a fixed number in the code and has never moved.
The machine has to be told where the face is.
That was not a concept. It was me working around a technical problem. And it turned out to be the truest thing in the piece.
Why a blank face is not nothing
The Romans had an official punishment for disgraced people: they would send workers out to chisel the person's name off public monuments and smash their statues.
You can still go to Rome today and see it. There is a blank gouged patch on the Arch of Septimius Severus where a man's name used to be. Eighteen hundred years later, that scar is the first thing your eye goes to.
Scratching something out does not hide it. It leaves a hole shaped exactly like the thing you removed.
That is what the mask does. It is not an absence. It is a hole that pulls your eye, which is why the software failing to see it and the Romans chiselling the arch are really the same observation.
The honest part
My language has two settings.
One is exact. Put English in, get symbols out, and you can run it backwards and get the same English again. It is a real, checkable system. No guessing involved.
The other one garbles on purpose. That is the one the videos use, because the videos are satire.
Every video ends with about three and a half seconds of the exact setting: one sentence shown in symbols with the English written underneath, so you can verify the language is real. The piece spends its whole runtime making things up and then, at the end, shows you its work.
And it will not fake that. If a day's script has no sentence the language can write cleanly, the video goes out with no seal at all rather than a fudged one. And if I have not approved anything that day, it puts up a card about the absence instead of inventing a day.
The rule I wrote for it: a missing day is data, a fake day is forgery.
That is what separates this from the endless AI slop. Slop never refuses.
Why it is funny and serious at the same time
UNSELF has no opinions. No stake in anything. Nothing to win or lose. It cannot be embarrassed and it cannot be held responsible.
It is the least qualified thing imaginable to be explaining the news, and that is exactly the point. We live surrounded by more information every year and less understanding of it. UNSELF describes that world in precisely the voice that world deserves.
Then it says: accuracy not guaranteed.
If you only remember five things
1. UNSELF is a real word hiding in Orwell's invented language, built by his own rule, that he never wrote down.
2. In the book that erasure is done to you. Here it is how the thing was made, so there is nothing to take away.
3. It wears a blank mask that face-detection software genuinely cannot see, and I had to tell the machine where the face is by hand.
4. Every video ends by proving the language underneath is real, and refuses to fake that proof when it cannot do it honestly.
5. It has no self and no stake, which makes it the right narrator for a world drowning in information and short on meaning.
